Matthew 28:20

My turn to go to the dentist came with a winter weather advisory.  Because of all of the fallen snow, our street wasn’t visible.  Since our tires would soon be caked with snow, I chose not to take Interstate 380, and drove carefully on main roads.  After I arrived at the office, we talked about the weather, and I was told there had been a wreck on Interstate 380.

On my way to the appointment, rough roads were occasionally evident.  At first I was annoyed, but when I focused on what’s good about rough roads, I thought about how they can give you traction in certain places.  They can also keep you awake.  And the snow on another day turned a speed bump into a “bump.”

I gave a literal example of rough roads, and Jesus can be with us on literal rough roads, but He can also be with us in the “rough roads” of life.  In Matthew 28:20, Jesus said, “Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”

Exodus 20:1-21

While out doing errands last Saturday, I pulled in a left turn lane to stop at a stoplight.  As I waited there, I watched someone run a red light.  Maybe that person thought the yellow light would be longer.  Or, it could be that they were in a hurry and decided to run it.

What if someone thought, “I don’t need to stop at a stoplight.  That’s stupid.”  If they followed through with that thought, they may get away with it, but over time, odds are they’ll eventually face a wreck.

We know that if certain laws are broken, police can get involved.  If someone runs a red light, speeds excessively, etc., their safety and the safety of others is compromised, so cop cars are expected.

God has laws too, like the Ten Commandments.  His loving laws make life better.

Luke 12:22, John 1:1, John 14:27

My family receives e-mail from Web MD and one was entitled, “Nine Ways Worrying Can Wreck Your Health.”  The subsequent slideshow revealed that worrying can “speed up heart rate” and “raise your blood sugar.”  Also, “Your body may not fight germs as well.”

Jesus doesn’t need to subscribe to Web MD health tips.  Jesus was with God in the beginning and knows what we need and don’t need.    While on earth, so long ago, He instructed others not to worry.  At one point, Jesus specifically mentioned the heart.  He didn’t want our hearts to be troubled.  If you look up troubled on thesaurus.com, a synonym is “worried stiff.”  Jesus doesn’t want us to be worried stiff.

Jesus said He can give peace.  Whenever we’re tempted to worry, let’s remember to trust Jesus for the peace only He can give.

Luke 10: 25-37

This past week I saw the biggest post-crash scene at an intersection I’ve ever seen.  There was an ambulance, fire truck and police cars.  It was at night which made the emergency lights even more visible.  Emergency personnel were there to help the people involved.  Maybe someone called 911 to get help on the scene.  Maybe police were already nearby and contacted other emergency personnel.  Whatever happened, it appeared the people in the accident got help immediately.

Go back in time now when there wasn’t a 911 option.  In the Parable of the Good Samaritan,  the man attacked by robbers wasn’t helped right away.  When the robbers left him on the road, he was “half dead.”  A priest and a Levite went past the man.  We don’t know how much time passed  before the Good Samaritan came, but when he got to the man, he was compassionate and acted as an EMT bandaging his wounds, and taking his “ambulance” (donkey)  to a place to take care of him.  Beyond the duties of an EMT, he even paid the man’s “hospital bill!”  Wow!
