Genesis 6:13, Jonah 1:1-2

Recently we watched “Little House on the Prairie” with the kids.  In one of the episodes, Johnny Cash’s character pretends to be a preacher.  While talking to a little girl whose dog just died, he says something about Jonah on the ark with all of the animals.  The girl corrects him, saying that he meant Noah.  Hearing that made me want to compare the lives of Noah and Jonah.  On the surface, I noticed the words are both two-syllables and rhyme.  After comparing their biographies in, “Who’s Who in the Bible,” I found the following similarities:

Noah– God talked to him, he got on a boat (not a fisherman), and he had a positive experience with a plant (olive leaf brought by a dove that revealed there was vegetation growing).

Jonah– God talked to him, he got on a boat (not a fisherman), and he also had a positive experience with a plant (God provided shade with a plant).
